Spalding led the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players (NA), the first professional baseball league in America, in wins with 19 during its inaugural season in 1871. Despite his efforts Boston would finish 1.5 games behind the Champion the Athletic of Philadelphia Club. For the next five seasons the teams that Spalding pitched for would finish in first place and he would lead the league in wins every season.
